What to Wear for Your Family Session
A mother once arrived at a session with her four children dressed in four completely different colour families. One child was in bright orange. Another was in navy stripes. The third had a floral dress with six different colours in it. The youngest was in red. The father wore grey.
The portraits still came out beautifully. But it took twice as long to find angles where the outfits did not pull the eye away from the faces.
Clothing is not the most important part of a family session. The connection between people in the frame is. But what you wear either helps that connection show up on camera or fights against it.
Here is what works well at Ukuo’pi Photography. Stick to a single colour family across the whole group. Soft neutrals like cream, sand, warm white, and caramel work in almost every setting. Muted tones like dusty blue, olive, and blush also photograph beautifully. The goal is for every person in the frame to feel like they belong to the same image without looking like a uniform.

Avoid clothing with large logos, busy patterns, or bright neon colours. These pull the eye straight to the fabric and away from the faces. Faces are the whole point of a family portrait.
Texture adds interest without chaos. A linen shirt, a knit cardigan, a flowy dress with a subtle pattern — these give the image depth without competing with each other.
Comfort matters more than people expect. A child in an itchy dress or tight shoes becomes uncomfortable within twenty minutes. Uncomfortable children show it on their faces. Dress them in something they can move in, run in, and sit on the ground in. The portraits will reflect that freedom.
Bring a second outfit option for the children if you have one. Sessions at Ukuo’pi Photography run up to two hours and children sometimes need a change partway through either because of a spill or simply because a fresh outfit gives them a second wind of energy.
When in doubt, send us a message before your session. We are happy to look at outfit photos and give honest feedback before your shoot day arrives.
